Cemetery Junction Film Evaluation
FILM ONLY Review
In Cemetery Junction in the early 70’s we meet 3 greatest buddies who are about to come of age. We have Snork who works for the local railway station and he is pleased with his life but dreams of discovering a girlfriend. Freddie has high ambitions and starts working for a life insurance company donning a suit and tie every day for work and he is trying to make his life better than that of his families. The third member of the group is Bruce, he is slightly different from the others and is quite content material spending his time drinking and fighting and acquiring in trouble with the police. He talks a lot of moving away from Cemetery Junction but never truly does anything about it.
The 3 boys spend their time together acquiring into scrapes and having fun but will any of them genuinely make something very good of their lives and will any 1 truly leave Cemetery Junction?
I was not overly keen to watch this film but once it came onto the movie channels each me and hubby decided to give it a go, primarily due to the truth it was a Rickey Gervais film and was have liked his previous ones. I did have mixed feelings about this film and in spite of the slightly slow story line it was really entertaining.
The characters had been very good and I did like how diverse the 3 boys had been, we had Snork who was happy to plod along in life spending his time trying to get a girl and he did bring some humour to the story. I felt he was put upon a lot and created to be daft which was not always what the story essential. He was played by Jack Doolan and I believe he did a excellent job which delivering his lines and creating us all like him. Freddie was played by Christian Cooke and he too was great. I liked the bit of drive which he had and felt he was the strongest of the bunch. He seemed to want one thing from life and he did make an effort to go out and get it. He had some excellent 1 liners when it came to getting on screen with his family and I enjoyed seeing this small side to him as it did bring some depth to the story. Bruce was an all together distinct character, he had issues which his father and I liked how this was a massive part of how he acted and came across. He seemed slightly lost with his life and though he knew he wanted out of Cemetery Junction he never got off his butt and did some thing about it. He was played by Tom Hughes. I felt he did a great job of showing his emotions and dealing with his troubles and came across as a very great actor.
We had some really funny assistance roles in the film and for me the 1 which I felt was the strongest was that of Freddie’s father. He was played by Ricky Gervais and I loved the humour and wit he purchased to the film. I would have liked to have observed far more of him in the film although. This is British film and all the way by means of I sopped a lot of well know actors and they all played great modest roles. Some of the names included, Ralph Fiennes, Steve Speirs, Anne Reid and Emily Watson.
The setting for the film was the early 1970’s and I did appreciate this. The old way of life was shown in a fantastic way and I did enjoy the fashions which we got to see. The modest community where the boys lived was really suitable for the film as it came across as a small depressing and I could quite see why the boys wanted to leave. I do not believe this film would have had the very same impact and the story would not have been as very good if this was set in the present day or in a bigger town. The costumes were all great and all fitted quite properly with the year and feel of the film. As a result of the year we did have some wonderful music throughout the film. I loved the old tracks which had been played and enjoyed how they had been all well identified ones. I did locate I was toe tapping and singing along to some of them much to hubby’s disapproval!
There are no particular effects in the film and no action so I do not advise you watch if this is what you want from a film. We did have a couple of little fight scenes which added to the drama of the film but no effects were necessary for these. I don’t feel the film essential any CGI or effects and if any were utilised it would have taken away from the effects and year of setting.
This is a film only review so there are no bonus functions to speak about. The DVD can be purchased for around £5 from a selection of locations. The operating time of the film is 95 minutes and I felt this was quite long sufficient. We had the story moving at a steady pace from begin to finish. The rate is a 15 and I do agree with this as there are some scenes which contain drugs, drink and there is a lot of swearing all through the film.
I am going to advise this film as long as you do not anticipate too significantly from it. The acting from most was fantastic and the story was fascinating. There seemed absolutely nothing new to the story but I did still enjoy watching. This is surely not the strongest film from Gervais and as a result I can only give it 3 stars. I would say try to catch this for free of charge on the Tv instead of purchasing the DVD.

Perhaps I’m becoming Nostalgic, and possibly a bit 20th century…
If you are of a certain age you will remember a time when a band brought out an album and it was like a major event! It was truly exciting! Having been tantalised for weeks or even months by the music industry about the forthcoming event you would rush to the store, leaf by way of the rows of vinyl, pull out the records and actually look at the photos on the cover. Sometimes they came with posters, bonus tracks, occasionally the vinyl itself was coloured, or an import, or a coveted limited edition! It was so satisfying to pull out the inner sleeve, switch on the deck, blow the dust from the needle, then listen to the whir of the turntable and the gentle scratch as the needle hits the vinyl….

Ah…they had been the days! I guess it is a private experience. Do not get me wrong I have CD’s! They are wonderful, handy, convenient, but somehow, sometimes just too handy and too convenient! Do not get me wrong, have Cd’s can travel, Ipods too… but when you are at residence nothing can beat the ‘feel’ of a record…the sound is far more in the moment… more organic…
Possibly that is the difference. Maybe I hanker for a time when you just had to wait, when you could have a sneaky appear at the upcoming sleeve design in the music press but it wasn’t immediately accessible. Downloading is instant! Do not get me wrong…downloading is fantastic and is a wonderful promotional tool for bands, and you can download many playlists, but for me it lacks the excitement and is a purely auditory encounter. With vinyl you had to wait and savour the moment. Now, as with just about every thing else music is readily available at the click of the mouse. From my expertise absolutely nothing beats holding the album sleeve in your hands having waited an age to get a copy, and then studying the lyrics and staring at the photos. It was a far more all round experience. I guess that vinyl nonetheless carries a excellent appeal specifically with collectors. …and hey great album covers make fantastic art and can appear actually cool on the wall! You also felt as if you were buying in to your Genre of music, becoming a part of the scene even if it was only by default simply because you bought the record.
Having mentioned all this…is it just folks of my age (ahem…40 something!) or do younger men and women still like to experience music in diverse types, particularly vinyl? I have to admit to seeing fairly a few 20 somethings thumbing by means of rows of Vinyl in a record store the other day so possibly the plastic is still wonderful!To sum up…music is personal…we all have preferences. Like film v digital photography (I really like my Digi camera, but hey film – now that was genuine photography!!!)
Possibly there is room for all, but I would recommend, if you haven’t accomplished so already, at least sampling the knowledge of hearing a distinct tonal good quality with out the digital…and holding the album sleeve in your hand, or putting it on your wall…you just cannot beat it!
